WEBWIRE – Friday, January 06, 2012 Rad Source Offers Non-nuclear Irradiation Options

Rad Source, founded in 1997, developed irradiation methods that leave no radioactive isotopes as byproducts. It provides renewable, nonisotope, ionizing radiation replacements for self-shielded gamma irradiators. More than 300 hospital, university and pharmaceutical research institution used this technology. It’s used for small animal irradiation, sterile insect technique and cell irradiation. Other uses include blood irradiation, viral inactivation, food irradiation testing and research, medical device sterilization and seed mutation.

Rad Source’s RS 2000 Biological Research Irradiator is ideal for small animal irradiation. It’s used for myeloablation/chimera creation. The dose rate delivered to the animal cage is ~ 110 cGy/min, which is the same as a new Cs-137 unit.

The RS 2000 is also used for cell irradiation. It allows for long irradiation cycles accommodating high-dose requirements. The level 1 dose of ~110 cGy/min is the same as a new cesium-137 irradiator
The RS 2400 is best for sterile insect technique. The technique renders male insects sterile. They are then released to mate with female insects, producing nonviable offspring, as a way of controlling harmful insects pests.
